Our group considers existing and recent socialist states such as the former Soviet Union, China, North Korea, and Cuba in order to investigate how socialist ideology, political practice, and the Cold War have affected media, literature, politics, sports, art, and medicine. We examine such topics as the nature of state power, the limits of authoritarianism, the role of markets, the character of artistic expression, the role of socialism in the everyday life of citizens, and the reinvention of community in the context of transitions from state socialism.

The lead convener for this group is Amelia Glaser (Literature), with co-conveners Robert Edelman (History), Martha Lampland (Sociology), and Patrick Patterson in History.
